he Australian SAS Regiment was formed in July 1957 as 1st SAS Company. It was the first ever Australian special forces unit, and was clearly based upon the lessons learned in the Malayan campaign, which was then winding down. In 1960 the unit was transferred into the Royal Australian Regiment, the regular infantry element of the Australian Army.
